Anne T. Moore Humanities Lecture

March 14 @ 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm

Dr. Ernest Freeberg, Head of the History Department at the University of Tennessee, will present, “Eugene V. Debs and the Fight for Free Speech in World War I.”  Dr. Freeberg will explore the fight for civil liberties waged by those who worked to free American socialist leader, Debs, from prison who was serving a 10 year sentence for speaking against the U. S. decision to join the fighting in Europe. This fight to free Debs from prison raised questions about the balance between individual liberty and national security, and helped to expand the right to protest against war.
